from the Station. The other man was close by. The building occupi- -ed by the Sergeant became a school and he had to move to where the man lived at the end of the lane. The three I.F.C.s went to the matshed at the back of the station, 80 yards distant. It was built by a Chinese and rented to them at $2 a month. It was during my time that one of the three men went and lived in the farthest away house, owing to their wives quarrelling. There was a matshed partly blow away. I lived in the station until the theatres finished in June, and I then got a contractor to erect a matshed on the hill for $30. I had two children. I knew Sergeant Angus had permission

that

and the A. D. 0. came almost every week. First Mr. Tratman and then Kr. Orme. I told Mr. Tratman that I was going to repair the mat- -shed and put my wife and family there in the hot weather. He said it was a good idea. I believe Sergeant Angus left the written permission with me. It was in the top drawer of the desk. I took it that the permission extended to me. I do not know what became of the form with the permission. I think it remained in the drawer for a year, but eventually it disappeared. I presumed that I had permission to live in the matshed at night. I did not ask for special permission for myself to be absent from the quarters in the station.

I remember Sir F. Lugerd coming to Cheung, Chau on the Dragon Boat festival last year. It was the 5th. day of 5th. mo on. In June. I showed H. E. the charge room and arms; the Post Office, Harbour Office and boatmen's quarters. I told him the I. P. C.s used to live in the Station, but now outside. He asked me where and I told him. He looked at my quarters. Mr. Clementi and Mr. Fletcher were with I. E. Mr. Clementi mentioned to H. E. that I lived in

the matshed on the top of the hill. I am sure I spoke to H. E. about the matshed and he asked if it was comfortable. I told him

the matshed assisted me treatly. We then stood near the school hous and I pointed out the matshed occupied by the two Indian Constables H. E. then asked if there were any other Government buildings and I said there were none. We went towards the temple and as we passed
